Green Business

Green Office Partnership

Whether you own your office space or lease it, as an office manager you make operational and purchasing choices every day that can significantly reduce the footprint of your office and provide a cleaner, healthier environment for your staff.

The Green Seal™ Green Office Partnership Program is designed to guide offices in the straightforward steps they can take to become more sustainable. The program focuses only on those areas that are within the direct control of office managers, including:

  • Waste reduction and recycling
  • Office supplies
  • Kitchen and pantry supplies
  • IT equipment and management
  • Operational systems
  • Transportation
  • Training and education for staff

The program does not cover areas which are typically controlled by facility managers (e.g., HVAC equipment, lighting fixtures).

The Perks of Partnership

Green Office Partnership Program will provide tangible returns and benefits to offices in increased efficiency of operations and in marketing. Ensuring that office operations are efficient – including such practices as double-sided copying, using occupancy sensors for lighting, and enabling sleep mode for electronics products – can save your office money, even in a lease arrangement. Implementing proper recycling and using recycled materials can encourage employees to be more efficient with other office expenses and activities. And companies that report corporate social responsibility practices can list Partnership as an example of their sustainability leadership.

This can also provide a marketing benefit for offices in retaining and recruiting a competitive staff.

Becoming a Partner

The program intends to be a partnership that requires deliberate action on the part of the organization. Participants commit to greening their offices and achieving specific improvements over time.

Program Checklist:

Participating offices will download the checklist from Green Seal, work through a list of actions, taking particular note of the items that are flagged as mandatory.  The mandatory requirements ensure that all partners observe basic practices in sustainability.

Assessment:

An assessment is then conducted by Green Seal staff either in-person or virtually using video conferencing. After the completion of the assessment, and making any necessary upgrades to meet mandatory requirements, the office receives “Green Seal Green Office Partner” status.

Guidance Presentation:

Partners receive guidance on areas in which to improve their office operations and purchasing through a report and oral presentation.

Continuous Improvement:

A requirement of partnership is continuing improvement in office performance. Offices must show improvement in their sustainability in order to remain as a partner.

Through this program organizations can become a force for positive change in helping to green the economy. The program encourages more sustainable practices beyond what is currently required by law or regulation. The assessment is not intended as a legal compliance tool, and Green Seal staff will not provide such counsel.

3rd-Party Verification of Your Existing Program

For universities with a green office program already in place, Green Seal offers valuable independent verification that the program is comprehensive, credible, and effective.  The verification is intended to set a bar for sustainable office operations and ensure that the university program meets or exceeds those expectations.  The process includes Green Seal’s review of your program to evaluate it for best practices and the rigor of the environmental criteria.  Green Seal will make suggestions for improvement and provide training and guidance on how to conduct an internal review.  Green Seal will verify that the reviews are being conducted properly and in accordance with best practices.  Presentations or webinars for staff on the benefits of greening offices are also available.
