L.A. Green Lodging Program Certification Process

Based on the GS-33 Hotel & Lodging Standard

Welcome to the Los Angeles Green Lodging Program, part of the City’s Green Business Certification Program. Under the program, certification of hotels in Los Angeles is awarded by Green Seal. The process for applying for certification is outlined below.

1. Preliminary Certification Request

  • First, review the Green Seal Standard for Hotels, GS-33. In order to be certified, your hotel must meet the requirements in the standard. Download Certification Fees, Certification Guidebook, Certification Checklist, and Standard here.
  • Next, complete the Preliminary Certification Request form found here. Once the Request is received, Green Seal support staff will contact you about your application. 

2. Application Submission

  • If your hotels falls within the scope of the GS-33 Standard, Green Seal will send you the Application for Certification and Confidentiality Agreement.
  • To start the application process, you will submit TWO original signed copies of the application and the confidentiality agreement with payment of the evaluation fee. Green Seal will only accept original signed documents, not scanned or faxed copies. Please make checks payable to Green Seal, Inc. If applications are not signed or payment is not received, the application will not be processed. Mail your application, confidentiality agreement, and payment to:

  • Green Seal will countersign the application and confidentiality agreement and send you an original copy for your files.

3. Evaluation

  • You will be contacted by a Green Seal Project Manager to begin the evaluation process.
  • The Project manager will guide you through the data submission process, starting with the materials that you already have on hand. You will be notified about what information/data, if any, is still needed. If you don’t have all the data, don’t panic! Green Seal will work with you and your suppliers to gather the missing info.
  • The evaluation process can take a few weeks or several months depending on the time it takes to gather and submit the information required. Should your hotel fail to meet the requirements for certification, Green Seal will inform you of the reason(s). In most cases, hotels are able to modify their original submissions in order to achieve certification.

4. On-Site Audit

  • When the evaluation is near completion, a Green Seal Auditor will conduct an on-site audit of your hotel to ensure compliance. You will be responsible for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred during the audit.
  • The Auditor will supply you with an audit report with any required corrective actions after the audit. Corrective actions noted during the on-site audit must be addressed within 120 days of receipt of the audit report.

5. Certification and On-Going Compliance Monitoring

  • Once your hotel has been shown to meet the requirements of GS-33, certification is awarded and your hotel is granted a license to use the Green Seal Certification Mark on marketing materials.
  • Green Seal’s Marketing, Communications, and Client Services staff can provide tools to help you promote your accomplishment and deliver the biggest return on your investment in credible third-party certification of your sustainability efforts.
  • Periodic compliance monitoring is conducted to ensure that your hotel continues to meet the requirements of certification. The monitoring process involves a review similar to the initial certification evaluation. Monitoring fees are due every twelve months, on or before the anniversary of certification.
