Green Seal Standards

Our sustainability standards for products, services, and companies are based on life-cycle research, and are developed in an open, transparent, and stakeholder-involved process. Green Seal standards provide criteria and guidelines for manufacturers, service providers, and companies to work toward sustainability and Green Seal certification. Green Seal has 33 issued standards that cover 400 product and service categories.


Household Products

GS-01 Sanitary Paper Products This standard establishes environmental, health, and social requirements for sanitary paper products, including products such as bathroom tissue, facial tissue, paper towels, napkins, and placemats.
GS-05 Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) This standard is for energy efficient lighting including lamps used for general illumination purposes, special purposes, and includes both screw based and pin based lamps and those with integrated and non-integrated ballasts.
GS-07 Printing and Writing Paper This standard is for printing and writing paper.
GS-08 Cleaning Products for Household Use This standard is for general-purpose, bathroom, glass, and carpet cleaners marketed specifically for use in household or similar residential settings and biologically-active cleaning products (enzymatic and microbial products for routine cleaning).
GS-11 Paints, Coatings, Stains, and Sealers This standard covers wall and ceiling coatings, including paints and reflective wall coatings, anti-corrosive coatings, including rust-preventative coatings, floor paints, primers (undercoats), stains and finishes, and sealers, including concrete and masonry sealers.
GS-13 Windows The standard is for residential fenestration products including windows, skylights, glazed exterior doors and storm doors.
GS-16 Reusable Bags This standard is for reusable carrier or carryout bags that are intended and designed for hang-carrying (e.g., hand- or shoulder-carrying) a variety of goods or commodities. The standard includes replacement of single-use bags such as, grocery, retail or shopping bags, tote bags, produce and lunch bags, and reusable dry-cleaning bags. The standard also includes common reusable bags such as, backpacks, duffel bags, handbags or purses, bank and security bags, diaper bags, postal bags, as well as garment and laundry bags.
GS-43 Recycled Content Latex Paints This standard is for recycled-content interior and exterior latex paint.
GS-44 Soaps, Cleansers, and Shower Products This standard is for hand, hair, and body soaps and cleansers used and rinsed after use including liquid and solid soap and cleansers, shampoo, conditioner and related shower products for baby, child, adult, commercial, professional, and pet use.
GS-48 Laundry Care Products for Household Use This standard is for laundry care products including powder, liquid or pre-measured dosage laundry detergents, stain removers and dryer sheets for household uses.
GS-50 Personal Care and Cosmetic Products This standard is for products that are intended to enhance the appearance and feel of the skin and hair and provide other personal care and hygiene functions and are left on the body. This includes lotions, moisturizers, oils, powders, creams, sun block, insect repellent, antiperspirant, and deodorant used for adults, babies, children, and professional-use.
GS-52 Specialty Cleaning Products for Household Use The standard covers household specialty surface cleaning products and odor removers, including but not limited to: biologically-active cleaning products (enzymatic and microbial products for specialty cleaning and odor control); boat cleaning products; deck and outdoor furniture cleaning products (automatic and hand); graffiti removers; metal cleaning products; motor vehicle (automotive/tire/wheel) cleaning products; motor vehicle windshield washing fluid; optical lens cleaning products; oven cleaning products; upholstery cleaning products; and other cleaning products sold for specific specialty uses.
WITHDRAWN - GS-47 Stains and Finishes (2015 - GS-11) This standard has been withdrawn and replaced by GS-11, Edition 3.2. It was for stains and finishes, applying to water-borne, solvent-borne, semi-transparent or opaque stains and varnishes, shellacs, water-based finishes, polyurethane, lacquer, oil finishes and clear metal lacquers.
