Green Seal standards provide criteria and guidelines for manufacturers, service providers, and companies to work toward sustainability and Green Seal certification. The Green Seal Standard for Sanitary Paper Products, GS-1, establishes environmental, health, and social requirements for products such as bathroom tissue, facial tissue, paper towels, napkins, and placemats for both institutional and retail markets.

The standard addresses the primary life cycle issues for sanitary paper products from product performance, raw materials, manufacturing, packaging and use. The standard can serve as a tool to help companies begin to take action to improve their products and is available for Green Seal certification.

Note: the fourth edition of GS-1 encompasses the second edition of GS-1 Tissue Paper and the first edition of GS-9 Paper Towels and Napkins.
