According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, space heating (30.7%), space cooling (12.3%), water heating (12.2%), and lighting (11%) make up the top four energy uses in homes. Hit those high impact categories when reducing your energy use.

Wash your laundry in cold water (also consider
air-drying your laundry). Change your furnace filter regularly. Close curtains or blinds at night. Only purchase LED lightbulbs. Unplug electronics when not in use. Turn your thermostat down or off while you are away.

6. Celebrate at green restaurants & hotels

Demand green catering or hotels with green meeting spaces when planning big events like company outings or celebrations. Speak up and use your purchasing influence to create permanent change in such businesses.

Make sure the hotel or restaurant has policies in place to minimize water and energy consumption (and don’t be fooled by “greenwashing”). Better yet, seek out hotels and restaurants certified by a trusted third-party.
