EMA Green Seal Program

About the EMA Green Seal Program

The EMA Green Seal program permits the Environmental Media Association to simultaneously promote sustainable production methods and highlight those in the industry who’ve made strides in incorporating such practices into both film and television productions.

The program recognizes green film and television productions. Recognition is provided following independent, third-party verification and a finding of a production’s adherence to sustainable production standards.

Developed in partnership with the premier green certification non-profit organization, Green Seal, Inc., the program covers all facets of a production and provides filmmakers a practical and comprehensive set of criteria for environmentally responsible filmmaking. In each area of focus, the criteria include specific environmental initiatives in order to help producers prioritize where to focus their greening efforts.

The EMA Green Seal program is designed to be flexible enough that any production can potentially qualify, regardless of budget or size.

The Recognition Process

The EMA Green Seal is determined on a scale of 150 points and in addition to the mandatory requirements of the program, a minimum threshold of 35 points must be obtained in order to receive EMA Green Seal recognition.

Following the submission of a full and complete application, a site visit to the production is required for recognition to be conferred. The visit allows Green Seal auditors to verify, first hand, the practices put in place and allows the auditor to interview a representative of the production. Prior to the visit, the Green Seal representative will request any formal documentation that may be required as proof of certain actions taking place. The site visit should not last more than half a day and will not interrupt the production. There is currently no charge to the productions for the site visit or for the recognition itself.

How to Apply

In order to apply for an EMA Green Seal recognition please fill out the “Award Criteria” tab on the “EMA Green Seal Application.”

Important: To provide adequate time for a Green Seal representative to plan and carry out a site visit, please send in the completed application before production is scheduled to begin. Coordination of a site visit will usually require two or three weeks of lead time.
