Greening Your Government Projects
Prepared environmental criteria
A leading state was seeking environmentally responsible paints for a master contract. Green Seal supplied a life-cycle standard that considered performance and toxic substances in addition to VOCs. Six manufacturers meeting the standard responded to the RFP.
Provided lists of environmentally responsible products
Green Seal provided lists of environmentally responsible products to purchasing officers of a major Federal agency. The lists were compiled by surveying all national manufacturers, reviewing their responses to a questionnaire and evaluating their products against life-cycle criteria. The lists included tables showing how well the recommended products met the criteria.
Identified environmental opportunity
Office workers are often overlooked in the search for environmental improvement. Green Seal's survey of a set of government offices produced 37 recommendations for lessening environmental impacts.
Created green operating manual
A major state general services department wanted to introduce green products and practices into their building maintenance. Green Seal prepared a Green Maintenance Manual that presented specific practices to protect the environment and reasons for them. The manual included product criteria.
Drafted green contract language
The headquarters of a Federal agency wanted maintenance contractors to use environmentally responsible products. Green Seal worked with the agency on contract language specifying environmentally responsible maintenance products and requiring commitments to them.
Saved money
Green Seal reviewed a facility's paint purchasing and recommended product criteria that saved $1.76 a gallon while improving environmental performance.
Developed standards
Federal agencies are required by the Technology Transfer and Advancement Act to use consensus standards. To help, Green Seal prepared Federally funded, consensus environmental standards for industrial and institutional cleaners, adhesives, and degreasers.
